History and Background
Li Po Chun United World College was established in 1992 as one of the member schools of the United World College movement, under the guidance and assistance of the Government of Hong Kong and entrepreneur Li Po Chun. It is located in Hong Kong Wu Kai Sha and is the only United World College in the entire East Asian region. The College provides unique opportunities for students to learn about China first hand through one-week volunteer trips and a unique “Chinese Studies” course.
Student Life and Statistics
Li Po Chun United World College admits students from over 80 countries around the world and from many local schools in Hong Kong. The student body is comprised of 260 students, of which roughly 40% are local students and 60% overseas students. Of that 60%, students are not only from industrialized nations but also internationals from developing countries. Students take courses of the International Baccalaureate program, and, in addition, engage in various extracurriculars such as sports, volunteering, and cultural organisations.
As a Parent Organisation and Governing Body of the Conference
Li Po Chun United World College was chosen to be the site for the upcoming Sino-Japan Youth Conference for many reasons: First of all, the college is located in Hong Kong, which is a midway station between China and the rest of the world. Second, Hong Kong is described as one of the most multicultural cities in the world. In Hong Kong, there is a relatively small presence of racism and bias towards others due to the prominence of international interactions and cultural understanding. This atmosphere well suits our conference, as the conference also seeks to deepen understanding between Chinese and Japanese youngsters. Third, the Sino-Japan Youth Conference Committee has received a significant amount of support and assistance from LPCUWC, not to mention that main members of the Sino-Japan Youth Conference themselves are students of LPCUWC.
